Nara Park is one of the places that we were able to visit during our Japan Trip. It is located less than one hour from Osaka and Kyoto. We included this as part of our Osaka itinerary.
Nara Park (奈良公園, Nara Kōen) is a large park in central Nara. It was established in year 1880, it is also the location mostly of Nara's main attractions.
The Nara Park is considered as the home to hundreds of deer that are freely roaming around the area.
Considered in the indigenous faith of the Japanese people, known as Shinto (The way of the Gods) to be messengers of the Gods, Nara's nearly around one thousand two hundred (1,200) deers have become a symbol of the city.
Nara's deer are surprisingly tame, however they can be aggressive if they think you will feed them. There are a lot of sellers of Deer crackers around the park, and some deers are beside those sellers.
Deers will go near you when they see and smell the crackers and will bow to you or do signs to let you feed them as they know you have crackers on hand. Some even follows you.
How to go to Nara Park?
Nara Park is around five (5) minutes walk from Kintetsu Nara Station or about a twenty (20) minutes walk from JR Nara Station.
Also it depends on the your phasing walk. You can opt to walk slowly and enjoy the scenery while walking and that's what we did.
Those deer are certainly tame and use to being around people. Looks like a wonderful place to spend the day out enjoying everything with the family.
